Born Learning Night

October 22, 2015 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

Anderson County Schools was awarded a  United Way Born Learning Academy grant in late May.  After a great deal of planning and anticipation, the first workshop, held in September, was a great success with seven families attending as well as a number of school district Administrators and community stakeholders.     According to research done by the Kentucky Board of Education nearly half of Kentucky’s children are not prepared for kindergarten.  Therefore, this program was designed to help schools better prepare families for their critical role as a child’s first teacher for school.

The next Born Learning Academy night will be held at Sparrow Early Childhood Center on Thursday, October 22, 2015 from 5:30-7:00.   This session will feature activities centered around “Building Relationships.”  This is a free program for families who are expecting or have a preschool aged child. The workshop  includes a meal for participating families to enjoy together.  All family members are welcome to attend and participate in the hands on learning.

For more information and to register, contact Barbara Basham at 839-2504. For more information about the program, visit uwky.org/bornlearning.

The United Way Born Learning Academy, driven by Toyota is an innovative program that meets a critical need in Kentucky communities – early childhood parental education. This school-based Academy consists of six workshop sessions that provide parents with the tools to help their children succeed in kindergarten and beyond.

The series teaches busy, overwhelmed parents and caregivers how to turn everyday moments into learning opportunities. The tools are easy, sometimes as simple as talking about the colors of the trucks that pass by while mom and baby head to the grocery store. The school-based workshops allow a meaningful conversation to start with parents early, offering them the essential building blocks of education to support their child’s future academic successes and to create a strong connection between home and school.

Parents of young children (prenatal to five years old) are engaged in hands-on activities and discussion about what it means to be ready for kindergarten and offered strategies they can use at home to maximize their child’s early learning and development.
