11 Year Old Creates Donation Drive to Help Hurricane Victims

An amazing Anderson County Middle School student took it upon himself to help victims in Texas from Hurricane Harvey with his own donation drive.

Marcus Fields, only 11 years old, wanted to try to help the many suffering in Texas.  According to his mother, Angela Ervin Fields, Marcus wanted to go to Texas to help directly, but as a student, it would be difficult.  “He really wanted to go to Texas to help but as an 11 year old, that’s a bit difficult during the school year,” Angela said.

Not being deterred, Marcus came up with another idea to start his own donation drive, called Helping Houston.  Connecting with local organization to serve as donation drop off points as well as Mission Journeys to deliver the donated supplies, his want to help became a reality.  “Just one little boy trying to make a difference – sharing the love from Kentucky to our Texas friends,” Angela said.

Angela explained that they are grateful for the local organizations serving as drop off points for donations, which include Anderson Christian Church, Anderson County Attorney’s Office, and the Hair Nation Salon in Lexington.  They will be accepting donations for the next few weeks and are looking for the following items:

• Toothbrushes/toothpaste
• Shampoo and soap
• Deodorant
• Baby wipes, wash, lotion, diapers, and food
• Wash cloths
• Socks and blankets
