Although the weather was threatening, the opening ceremony for the Anderson County Little League drew a large crowd as dozens of teams were celebrated this morning along with the introduction of the new president of the league.

John Spencer took over as president of the league as former president, Gabe Uebel, stepped down and became vice president so he can work on other projects.  John is very excited to lead the league this year.  “I do it because I’m passionate about helping the kids,” he said.

During the ceremony, he gave thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors who make the ceremony and league happen each year.  He explained that it takes many, many hours to put everything together.

For the ceremony, Amy Kate Smith, who is the Anderson County Distinguished Young Woman of 2017, sang the National Anthem.  Noel Cotton Jr lead the opening prayer, Mayor Goodlett lead the crowd for the Pledge of Allegiance and Judge Executive Orbrey Gritton lead the players in the little league pledge.  Bailey Curry, ACHS softball star and KHSAA fast pitch softball state record holder for career home runs, got to throw the opening pitch to league vice president, Gabe Uebel.

Following the ceremony, the first Challenger game was held.  The challenger games allow children with disabilities to play baseball with volunteer buddies helping them.  For the opening game, the ACHS football team helped the challenger players.
