Emma B Ward Elementary will be home to new summer music camp that has proven very popular in Tennessee.

Emily Davis, music teacher at Emma B Ward, is working on hosting an arts and music summer camp at the school based on work developed by Dr Eric Branscome who is from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.  Called Camp Granada, the program integrates arts and music into a fun program for the students.

According to Emily, the program started in Tennessee about two years before she left the state to teach music here in Kentucky.  Starting with just 25 students in one location, the program has grown steadily to multiple locations.

Seeing the success, Emily decided to work on bringing the excellence of the elementary music program to Anderson County. “Being a school system that has one of the best elementary music programs in [Tennessee], I wanted to bring some of that up here,” she said.

As she develops the program with Dr Branscome, the Anderson County Camp Granada will be offered this year to just students at Emma B Ward.  If the program proves popular, she is planning to open it up to all students in the district in the following year.

Students who attend this year’s program will be treated to a space theme.  Emily explained that the music, arts, crafts, and games will all have a space theme, teaching students not only creativity but also space exploration.  Students will be singing, playing instruments, listening, and having fun with summer camp style games.

According to Emily, the program is also acting as a fundraiser.  All proceeds from registrations will go to purchasing a class set of ukuleles for the Emma B Ward music program.

The camp will run from July 24-28th, 9am to 2pm, at Emma B Ward. Current enrollment is up to twenty-five.  Registration for the Anderson County, Ky. location will continue until July 17th, but students who register may not be guaranteed a t-shirt as time is needed for shipping.
