During this past Anderson County School board meeting, Superintendent Sheila Mitchell recognized a number of high performing students and staff members, including the incredible Anderson County High School dance team which has won numerous awards.

The ACHS dance team, coached by Lisa Ann Winfrey, has been winning many awards during the last four years of competition, even getting to compete and place against teams from cities like New York and Philadelphia.  “They’ve done a good job all these years,” Coach Winfrey said.

The team has a growing list of national and state titles.  For this school year alone, they were national champions at the Cheer Max Hip Hop and Open competitions at Cincinnati.  Last year, they placed third at the AmeriDance Wow Choreography Hip Hop competition at Myrtle Beach.  They’ve also been regional champions from 2014 to 2016 and runners up in 2017.

For the 2014-15 school year, they were the AmeriDance state champions and won the WOW Choreography Award, as well as being the High Dance Score of the Day and grand champions.  They also were the Louisville International Grand Champion in the Varsity Hip Hop competition.  And the year before that, they also were national champions in the AmeriDance competition, taking the High Dance Score of the Day.

Many of the dancers go back to dancing together in middle school.  The seniors on the team danced together back in the 8th grade where they won a JamFest National Title in Indianapolis.  They also won every competition that year.

Because of their great work, they have performed at numerous events including Bearcat Madness, senior nights for the soccer teams, as well as at Kentucky State University ballgames.  They have also performed Thriller for the local DARE program and even for the Indianapolis Pacers pregame show.

Also recognized during the meeting were students Justin Hunter and Zane Drury.  Justin is the 2017 Math Counts Champion where he earned a full tuition scholarship at the University of Kentucky.  Zane is the 2017 District 7 and Region 4 wrestling champion and placed fourth in the the state competition.  His overall score for the year was 43-6.

In addition, Superintendent Mitchell recognized selected teachers of the year from each school in the district. Chosen for their commitment, dedication, and their focus on excellence, the following teachers have made a great impact on Anderson County children:

Amanda Cartinhour from Sparrow Early Childhood Center
Sue Welsh from Saffell Street Elementary
Meghan Drennan from Emma B Ward Elementary
Jason Alexander from Robert B Turner Elementary
Alex Hunter from Anderson Middle School
Lisa Clarke from Anderson County High School

Jason Alexander, Alex Hunter, and Lisa Clarke were also recognized as Campbellsville Teachers of the Year.
