Many from the community have come together to help children who are struggling reading in a new program for Anderson County residents.  Called Prime Time Family Reading Time, the program joins a scholar and a professional storyteller to encourage reading and critical thinking among 6 to 9 year olds.

Sponsored by the Kentucky Humanities Council and the Kentucky Libraries Association, Prime Time was originally developed in Louisiana where the idea took off and has had great success here in Kentucky.  The program has been in many counties and is now making its first appearance in Anderson County.

Locally, the Anderson Public Library, many from the Anderson County School system, and the Anderson County Adult Education Center have come together to organize the event.  According to Sherry Noon, APL children’s librarian, the program teaches how to read at home as well as to teach parents how to ask open ended questions.

Cynthia Changaris, the nationally recognized storyteller for the program, explained that it not only encourages reading but also connects literature with the real-world.  Some of the discussions include high level topics like greed, determination, and fairness.  Cynthia said that she will be bringing stories to life and teaching children that a story can be shared from memory instead of just words in a book.

Starting this past Tuesday, Saffell Street Elementary will host five more Prime Time sessions each Tuesday from 6pm to 7:30pm.  The children will also receive door prizes and free meals.  To register, contact the Anderson Public Library at (502) 839-6420.  For more information about Prime Time, check out their website.
