A Perfect Snack That Even Kids Can Make

Ciara Hyatt from Homemade Takeout, our food columnist, came up with this amazing blueberry-apple crumble that is perfect for kids to help make:

My kids love to help out in the kitchen, so lately I’ve been letting them get involved and trying my best to stay out of their way.  Recently, my 10 year old daughter got an American girl magazine in the mail and in it were a few recipes. She really wanted to make one of them, but unfortunately, we didn’t have all the ingredients for it. I told her to put the recipe in a safe spot, and we would get the stuff soon.

Unfortunately, the recipe was lost, so when we came home with the blueberries and apples we needed, we had no other help. We improvised, and came up with a new dessert that was so good, I added it to my recipe book!  This blueberry-apple crumble one is a must-try. And it’s so simple, the kids can even make it!
Next time you’re in the grocery store, pick up these yummy ingredients and enjoy. Just don’t lose the recipe!!

Blueberry-Apple Crumble:
1 1/2 cups fresh blueberries
2 Granny Smith apples, sliced (see photo)
1 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp all purpose flour
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp vanilla
3 tbsp butter, melted
Mix ingredients together in a bowl and set aside.

Topping:
1 1/4 cup old fashioned oats
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp ground cinnamon
6 tbsp butter
Add all topping ingredients to food processor and pulse until a loose mealy mixture forms.
Place filling ingredients into a greased round baking dish.
Pour crumble topping evenly over mixture and bake in a preheated oven of 375 for 30-35 minutes, until apples are soft and topping is crispy and golden brown.
Serve with old fashioned vanilla ice cream.
