Many local residents and tourists alike will be having an international experience this year at the Native Dawn Flute Gathering.  Created by Fred Keams, the 5th Annual Native Dawn has become an amazing cultural event hosted at the Lawrenceburg Green featuring many different Native American traditional musicians and dancers.

This year’s event, which will start this coming Friday and last the entire weekend, has a number of new performers and even a celebrity.  According to Fred, he was invited to attend the Chinese New Year in Lexington and a Kite Festival in Georgetown.

At both locations, he got to know Chinese and Japanese traditional performers and invited them to perform at the Native Dawn.  The Kentucky Chinese American Association will be performing the Dragon Dance as well as a drum performance from the Japanese Tiako Drum Group.

Also new this year will be Tallchief from the Seneca Nation in New York.  According to Fred, they will be performing the traditional smoke dance after a last minute decision to attend. “We were very honored to have them,” Fred said.

There will also be a special celebrity performing at the event.  Neal James from Animal Planet’s Call of the Wildman will be performing the banjo a bit each day.  He will also be selling and autographing his CDs.

The Native Dawn will still feature the ever popular Aztec Dancers, ten different flute players, color guard and bagpipe playing, and more.  Fred said that the event is growing every year and is becoming well known around the nation at other flute type events.  The vendors will also be from around the nation.
