Helping those in need has gotten a helping hand for a charitable organization here in Lawrenceburg.  The LIGHT Center has recently received a $5000 grant from the United Way of the Bluegrass to help provide emergency shelter for displaced people in need of escaping abusive or dangerous residential situations as well as provide temporary housing for homeless people.

The center, which was created by Helping Hands—Heart of Community, 127 Worldwide, and Harvest Christian Ministries last year as a way to direct those in need to various services around the county, has helped 594 people with 21 of those needing temporary housing.  With helping so many, they decided to apply for the local United Way grant on February 18th, which they have received this month.

In addition to helping provide temporary housing, the center will also be using the grant funds to assist with basic needs, financial stability, and student success.  They want to not only make sure all residents in the county have essential services like water and electricity, but also bring education about personal or family budgets as well offer tutoring and scholarship search services for students in need.

With this grant, the center will be able to bring more help to more Anderson County residents.  The United Way of the Bluegrass statement that “It takes everyone in the community working together to create a brighter future” is a challenge the LIGHT Center has added to its vision for improving Anderson County.

For more information about the LIGHT Center, check out their Facebook page or website.  The center is located on 700 West Broadway, Suite 3, near the Dairy Queen.
