Commonwealth Credit Union Assists Local Charitable Organization

Due to the generosity and kindness of a local financial institution, one charitable organization was able to assist another charitable organization in meeting the needs of people in two separate communities.  Commonwealth Credit Union contacted the LIGHT Center of Lawrenceburg about conducting a joint community effort in town to assist the LIGHT Center in its work in helping others. The trickling effect of charity work began when Commonwealth Credit Union’s Lawrenceburg Branch held its Community Shred Day on May 20th. The financial institution asked its customers, who were bringing their personal or financial documents for shredding at the banking location, to also donate hygiene items for the Franklin County Women’s Shelter. On May 26, Chelsea James of Commonwealth Credit Union presented the donated items to Donna Crain Drury, co-founder and Board of Directors member of the LIGHT Center.

According to Donna, the items will be delivered to the Women’s Shelter next week, at which time representatives of the LIGHT Center will tour the shelter and express gratitude for the Frankfort shelter receiving women of Anderson County when necessary. Donna stated, “Anderson County does not have any place to shelter women in emergency or short-term situations when they arise. That is much needed in this community.”  She further said, “Without the compassion and kindness at the Franklin County Women’s Shelter (FCWS), Anderson County women would have no place to go close by. The Frankfort facility works well with the LIGHT Center when we have a homeless woman or a woman in an abusive or dangerous living situation who needs immediate shelter for their protection.  The LIGHT Center is very grateful for the Franklin County Women Shelter’s willingness to also serve people in need from Anderson County.”

On behalf of the LIGHT Center, Donna also expressed appreciation to the credit union for its participation in collecting donations of items that are in great need at FCWS in Frankfort.  “It’s through activities such as this by CCU that the LIGHT Center can help people in other ways besides monetarily,” Donna said.  “By a CCU customer giving just one or two items, each customer has helped give greatly to a need within their community.  That’s the way it should work with charity.”

The Women’s Shelter is a non-profit organization with a mission of improving the health, well-being, and stability of homeless and low-income women with their community services. The LIGHT Center, located at 700 West Broadway, Suite 3, Lawrenceburg, is a new charitable organization that provides assistance in meeting people’s physical, emotional, medical, educational, and other daily living needs.  The Center also provides resources and support for people to empower themselves by working toward brighter futures.

Donations can continue to be made for residents at Franklin County Women’s Shelter by dropping them off at the LIGHT Center.  For more information about the Center’s donation program in support of the shelter, call 502-859-0670 or contact the center at
