Big Changes Planned for Relay for Life

The Relay for Life has been a major event here in Lawrenceburg for many years.  Held at the Legion Park in June, the Relay has been a great event to help fight cancer and promote hope among cancer victims.  But, this year’s Relay will be changed to promote more excitement for the event.

At the Anderson County Relay for Life Preview Party on Thursday of last week, Jessica Moses, Kim Jennings of Commonwealth Credit Union and Jan Sexton of Farmers Bank announced new plans for the 2016 Relay.  Over the years, they’ve found the relay has had waning interest from the community, and they wanted to find a way to bring more excitement.

During a previous meeting, suggestions poured in, and on Thursday, they announced their new plans.  The Relay is partnering with the Wheels of Time car show to create a combined event downtown.  After voting for a name, the new event will be called “Cruisin’ for a Cure” and will feature the car show on Main Street while the Relay will be held behind Main Street towards the Lawrenceburg Green and the Anderson County Senior Center.

With the new combined event, they are hoping to bring more business downtown and gain support from the local businesses.  They’re planning for the week before the Relay to “Paint the Town Purple” with businesses putting up purple decorations in support of the Relay.

The new Cruisin’ for a Cure will feature a brand new date.  Because they’ve found that the previous Relays in June were warm and sometimes uncomfortable for everyone, they’re moving the date up to May 13th.  They’re also planning on using the senior center for the survivor dinner.
