Christmas Parade to be Held at New Time

The Lawrenceburg Christmas Parade will be held at a new time this year.  Following three years of evening parades, city officials decided to change the start of the parade to 11am on December 5th citing safety concerns and benefits for downtown merchants.  City Clerk Robbie Hume, during the past public works committee meeting this Monday, said that, after seeing what happened in Oklahoma when a car struck and killed four people during a homecoming parade at the end of October, the city decided to consult with all the public safety agencies county wide to discuss how to make the parade safer.  They agreed that a daytime parade would be much safer and easier for public safety officials to coordinate.

City officials then discussed what time during the day would be best.  Mayor Goodlett indicated that having the parade at 11am would help the many new downtown merchants as everyone could then shop and eat lunch on Main Street.  In addition, Robbie Hume mentioned that few floats and cars in the past were properly decorated for a night parade with lights so everyone could see them.  He also said that by having it at 11am, children attending the parade could easily eat lunch after the parade and not have to either rush to eat lunch before or go hungry during it.

For those wanting to join the parade and have a chance to win the competition, this year’s parade will be themed “Christmas Classics” with all entrants encouraged to portray their favorite Christmas character, story, or carol.  Parade lineup will begin at the Legion Park at 9am and judging will start at 10:30am.  Winners will receive a sign to display as they travel the parade.
