Anderson County School Board Recognizes Marching Band

The Anderson County Board of Education met last night for their monthly meeting.  They recognized the great success of the Anderson County Marching Band had this year with their many wins and their 3rd place overall at state finals.  Many band members and parents were present for the recognition.

The meeting then moved on to discussing the current state of the fleet of buses and the maintenance garage.  Director of Transportation Jeff Young talked on four major areas.  First, they are working on hiring three new bus drivers from ten current applicants.  Second, the bus fleet currently consists of 55 buses with 5 out of service and are, on average, about 13 years old.  The fleet drove a total of 477,791 miles last year.  The maintenance garage is currently in need of lighting, new fencing and gates, surveillance equipment, and new asphalt for the parking lot.  Finally, there was discussion about cost control including, among other things, selling or burning used oil for heat and timers on the bus heaters.

Gifted/Talented teacher Jeffery Eller presented the board with an overview of a new handbook for gifted students.  He also stated that there are currently 578 gifted students in Anderson County.  The board approved the new handbook unanimously.

The school board also reported on receiving an offer from the Kentucky Education Technology Systems of $30,515 for technology assistance which would need to be matched by the board.  The board approved the offer unanimously.
