Tucked away behind the Anderson Public Library is a small building, housing thousands of books.  The building is used by the Friends of the Library for their book sales they hold throughout the year.  The Friends of the Library is an awesome, all volunteer nonprofit organization dedicated to promote reading and literacy for all residents of Anderson County.  Donna Herrick, Pat Yates, and Julie Mink, three of the many volunteers at today’s book sale, said that the Friends of the Library donates all of their proceeds from their sales, totaling over $4000 a year, to the schools and the Anderson Public Library to help fund many programs like the Summer Reading Program and to help pay for Scholastic books for children in need.

The estimated 7,000 books housed in their building are donated from both residents of the county and the library through their discard program.  The Friends then categorize them and stock them all on the shelves for customers to purchase at extremely low prices.  All hard cover books are just $1 and soft cover are $0.25. Their children’s books are $1 for a whole bag and if they have too many books, they setup an overflow section outside where you can buy a whole box $1.

According to Brenda Daniels, who has been manning the cashier table for 8 years, the book sales have been getting busier each year.  With more and more donations from citizens, the Friends are looking for the best quality books that they can sell.  And so many wonderful residents have eagerly provided, including a family donating 25 boxes of books after the family member who owned them passed away.  So if you’re looking to buy a book or even a movie on just about any subject for a great cause or to donate your old books, head on over to the little building behind the Anderson Public Library before 3pm today.
