Sleepless in Lawrenceburg?

What a difference a night makes – a night of restful sleep, that is! We all know the feeling… that alert, yet calm waking after a solid night of zzzz’s just can’t be replaced!
National studies indicate, however, that at least 1 in 10 of us suffer from poor or insufficient sleep – and the percentage of Kentucky adults appears even higher. As we age, the frequency of night waking and early risings increase; add to this our busy schedules and digital distractions, and sleep seems less and less productive.

This insufficient sleep, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, depression, and multiple other chronic diseases and conditions. Good sleep is essential to a healthy immune system, positive outlook, strong memory, and cognitive clarity.

Fortunately, researchers are also focusing on antidotes to this widespread malady of sleeplessness, including a regular practice of yoga. Studies of yoga practitioners have indicated fewer sleep disturbances, less daytime fatigue, and a more restful night’s sleep. Spending as little as 30 minutes to focus on our breath and movement while stretching and releasing tension throughout the body can allow the mind the restfulness we need daily.

Yoga For You is a 60-minute class offered by Anderson County Community Education every Tuesday evening at 6pm. Hosted by the Anderson County Health Department in their Community Room, the class is open to participants 13 years or older and requires no prior yoga experience or advance registration. Instructor Jenny Howard Owen is a Certified and Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT200) who focuses her classes on breathing, safety in alignment, and pose variations for all student levels. Participants should bring a map, water bottle, and towel; the class fee is $5.
